Roger Federer, holding his favorite trophy (above).

The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, the only club left that does not seed in accordance with the ATP world rankings, has made 6 time Wimbledon champion and 7 times consecutive finalist Roger Federer, the top seed at next week’s Wimbledon Championships, despite the fact that Federer is now world # 2, having lost the ranking in Paris at the French Open to new # 1, Rafael Nadal.

Nadal has clearly been the best player in the game over the last 2 months, and in our opinion, he deserves the top seed.  But The All England Club, a veritable tennis mafia, chose Federer to be the top seed, in what could be a message to Nadal, who skipped Wimbledon last year as defending champion, despite playing exhibitions on grass right up until the event.

Federer has been shown enormous respect and confidence by the All England Club seedings this year.  In the past, we’ve always thought Wimbledon seedings made the most sense, because the club would elevate players who played well on grass who perhaps didn’t have their WTA or ATP ranking where it could have been.  Most recently, Venus Williams, the 5 time champion, has been shown a lot of respect by the club, seeding her annually a few places higher than her ranking, though this year, her high seed is deserved no matter how you look at it, with Venus being the world # 2 on the women’s side.

Play begins Monday at Wimbledon, which is still considered the most prestigious tournament in all of tennis.
