Maria Sharapova and Serena williams both won in straight sets this morning, setting up a rematch of the 2004 Ladies Wimbledon Final, in which Maria Sharapova upset Serena and claimed her first major championship, 6-1, 6-4.  They have met twice in major finals, with Serena demolishing Sharapova in Melbourne in 2007, 6-1, 6-2, and one other time at a major–aslo Australia–where Serena needed an extended 3rd set to win the semi-final match, 2-6, 7-5, 8-6.

The two ladies have never met before the round of 16 in their 7 career matchups, in which Serena holds a 5-2 edge lifetime.  Their head to head is listed below:

The 2 stars have not met since 2008 and Serena has not lost to Sharapova since 2004.  Both ladies looked in fine form today, with Sharapova dispatching Ioana Raluca Olaru of Roumania 6-1, 6-4 in 1 hour and 24 minutes and with Serena destroying Anna Chakvetadze, 6-0, 6-1 in 49 minutes.

The Williams sisters are also entered in the doubles where they look to defend their title and attempt to win a fifth consecutive major doubles title.  On Monday, Venus and Serena defeated Julie Ditty and Renata Voracova, 6-4, 6-2.  They will face Timea Baczsinszky and Tatiana Garbin in round 2.
