Three time US Open Ladies Singles Champion, 2 time US Open Ladies Doubles Champion, one time US Open Mixed Doubles Champion and world # 1, Serena Williams, still not recovered from a terrible foot injury sustained under very peculiar circumstances after Wimbledon, which Serena won, has withdrawn from the 2010 US Open beginning August 30th in Flushing, New York, several sources are reporting.

Serena_300 Serena Williams, who cut her right foot on broken glass at a restaurant recently, is questionable for the U.S. Open, according to the WTA Tour.

Williams had surgery on her foot last week, prompting the tour to announce that the top-ranked women’s tennis player would miss three tournaments leading up to the U.S. Open, which begins play on Monday, Aug. 30.

Today Serena officially pulled out of The Open, giving an immediate boost to the chances of some of her closest competitiors, including sister Venus, who will be joined in the draw by other former champions such as Kim Clijsters and Maria Sharapova who are both looking good of late on the hardcourts, but not Justine Henin, who announced this week she was shutting down the rest of her season due to an elbow injury.

While Venus’ chances for a 3rd US Open singles title have brightened, she can’t be pleased about this development for her sister’s sake, nor for their joint quest for doubles majors.  The Williams sisters were huge favorites going into Flushing to take their 11th major doubles title together.

And what of this supposed restaurant accident in which a glass table was broken, causing serious lacerations to Serena’s foot?  I don’t know.  It seems odd.  The greatest female tennis player in the world cuts her foot in some restaurant and misses a major championship that she will not get back, and that’s the end of the story?  No lawsuit?  No bloody foot pics making it to the net?

Am I more angry about this than Serena, who could have claimed her 2nd 3 slam season, and 14th major singles title with a win at Flushing?
