In the wake of the new CBA in the NBA, fear not, big market fans. The war between have and ‘have not’ owners has passed, and there can be no better indicator that the big markets made out smashingly well than the Knicks’ acquisition of C Tyson Chandler, the prize of this free agent class. The amnesty provision that the Knicks employed to gain the maneuverability to sign Chandler to a 58M contract when they were totally tapped out by walking away from the 14M contract of Chauncey Billups, provided they were willing to write him a check for that amount, is surely a clause that deep pocketed teams will be way more willing to use to their benefit than the smaller market teams who took such a hard line during the lockout that they forced.

Begs the question: why such histrionics in the first place? Well, as astute observers of labor disputes in sport, we did kind of agree with Billy Hunter’s assertion that the league was trying to break the players, behind a core of small market owners like Michael Jordan, lead hypocrite, who wanted the lockout to stretch on to the point where the players were feeling the impact of missed paychecks. So why abandon course in favor of a compromise that more favored the Knicks than the Kings, Celtics than Cavs?

Because Stern’s public stance that 15 or so clubs were losing money was so obviously no more than just a posture. If the Charlotte Bobcats aren’t willing to pay Ray Felton 7.5M per for 2 years, the 27/28 truly healthy teams around the league can not pay the price for it. If Lebron and Bosh won’t re-up or up with Cleveland, then Stern in his infinite wisdom can not negotiate a CBA that alters Cleveland’s geography and ethnic demography.

Look at the Memphis Grizzlies. They heaped money on Rudy Gay and Mike Conley, absorbed the huge deal of Zach Randolph, and are poised to now lavish 70M or more on Marc Gasol. They aren’t exactly hurting.

The new CBA did as much for small markets as it could have. By making top tier free agent movement essentially prohibitive financially to the player by limiting salary and term, the deal ensures that most sensible players will be traded for prime assets rather than seeing them flee in FA, getting way more in return than they would in an after thought sign and trade. That’s as far as they can go. The league does not have the ability to restrict player movement beyond that.

They put franchises in places like Minnesota in the first place, and were happy to carve up the franchise initiation fees, but they can’t make players want to be there. As for the Knicks, you have to respect the Chandler move, which brings to the club the elements they lack: size, toughness, shot blocking, rebounding and post defense. You’d have to respect the move for both the creativity and the cost, when compared to say, Nene, at 70M for 4 years. And for their ability to recognize that Paul wasn’t getting done and for seamlessly and successfully changing gears and getting this done.

The Knicks do have a passable player in Toney Douglass at the point, and with Billups out a good bit, TD has plenty of experience in the lead. He should see a lot of open looks, and with he and Chandler starting, they look like a better defensive club. Iman Shumpert, drafted on the strength of his defense, may now see some time at point guard as well, which we’d prefer to Bibby getting significant minutes.

Weak at two guard, the Knicks are in talks to bring back Jamal Crawford, who would be a great addition. Should that trade go down, expect Landry Fields to go the other way. Knicks GM Glen Grunwald just told Mike Francesa that the team will soon announce the signing of Jerome Jordan, and that they are still hoping to bring back Shawne Williams, who resuscitated his career with the Knicks. Grunwald also boasted that NY will have a 5M and a 2M exception available next season, and a 2.5M exception available right now.

As for the Nets, if they did speak to Dwight Howard on Thursday without permission, the Magic should file tampering charges. Can’t the Nets simply text D12’s entourage, like every other team?

6’6 swingman Amir Garrett (above).

St. John’s may have been denied a win by a very good St. Mary’s team Tuesday morning, but Dwayne Polee Jr. gave us a nice glimpse of the team’s bright future.  Polee, California’s Mr. Basketball last year, made his NCAA debut, scoring 16 points on 6-16 shooting.  Polee looked positively divine in the open court, if only human in the half court set.  Aside from an important three Polee bagged early in the 2nd half, his shot selection was questionable at best.  At least he has the talent to get his own shot against a sweet 16 team, which is more than you can say for St. John’s returning players.

In the open court, Polee intercepted a 1st half pass and raced down the other way for a monster, highlight reel jizzam.  He also made a steal that led to a picturesque layup in which the freshman displayed next level athletic ability.  As St. John’s prepares for its first win in the Lavin era tonight at 8 PM EST against Columbia back at home at Carnesecca, comes word that another major California talent has signed on–the 2nd in two weeks.  Last week it was big man Norvel Pelle, and today it was ESPN’s #62 player in the class out of Los Angeles by way of Nevada, explosive forward Amir Garrett.

Garrett’s declaration came on the heels of another major committment.  6’9 Dwight Meikle from Long Island, became the 2nd big man to join St. John’s 2011 class yesterday.  Meikle, very close to Quality Education Academy teammate and recent signee Dom Pointer, chose St. John’s sight unseen.

The Knicks may have lost out on the Lebron James sweepstakes, but one day after announcing the David Lee sign and trade that netted them Anthony Randolph, Kelenna Azubuike, and Ronny Turiaf, the Knicks have solved a problem at a long standing trouble spot, agreeing to terms on a three year contract with former Bobcat and North Carolina Tar Heel, Raymond Felton–who was perhaps the best remaining free agent available.

The Knicks reached an agreement in principle Friday with Felton, the free agent who played five seasons with the Charlotte Bobcats, including the last two under former Knicks coach Larry Brown.

The deal could be finalized as early as Saturday. Three days ago, Duhon signed a free agent contract with Orlando.

Felton’s contract is believed to be a three-year deal worth approximately $25 million, which doesn’t preclude the Knicks from pursuing Chris Paul or Tony Parker next summer. The Knicks were also considering Luke Ridnour, but felt that Felton was the better player to go along with Amar’e Stoudemire and Danilo Gallinari.

Felton is 26 years old, is a career starter, and has only missed 11 games in his NBA career.  He represents perhaps the best point guard solution the Knicks have come up with since a young Mark Jackson.

Monta Ellis (above).

Even though the Knicks suck, and will not land the type of free agent that will turn around the team, I am going to write about a few rumors I have heard and read.  Tony Parker.  Rumor is, he may be headed to Miami, because the Heat have assets to give that the Knicks do not possess.  I don’t know that the Heat view him as integral, but Parker told the Spurs he’d go to New York or Miami, and it would make sense that he go to Miami and play next to Wade, we assume, if the Heat can only retain Wade and not land a marquis free agent.

There have been rumors about Carlos Boozer wanting to go to Miami.  He lives in Florida, and he likes the Florida tax code.  Boozer is not a max player, so there could be room for Parker cap-wise, and if it came to pass, the Heat would have four very good players in Jermaine O’Neal, Boozer, Parker, and D-Wade.

Enough about the Heat.  Tony Parker is not the only Spur looking to get to New York.  Former Net, Richard Jefferson, has expressed interested in playing for the Knicks.  For some reason, he didn’t work out well in San Antonio, but Jefferson is still a serviceable player.  In fact, I’d prefer him to the hot rumor of the night, that the Knicks and Lakers will offer G Mike Miller their mid level exception, which would be approximately $ 32 M/5 yr deal.  Supposedly, Miller hit it off with Mike D’antoni, and believes he can be a big scorer in D’antoni’s “speed-ball” offense.  Message to Mike Miller!  Go to the Lakers and knock down jumpers next to Kobe and Ron Artest.  Frankly, I also hope he chooses the Lakers because I’m not big on Mike Miller getting my mid level exception.

NYC product Rafer Alston has expressed an interest in coming to the Knicks.  Alston is an excellent point guard.  I will be very displeased if Alston is not a Knick, considering that point guard is a long standing need and one of, if not the, most important position on the team.  At this point, a best case scenario for the Knicks would be something like Stoudemire, the Monta Ellis for David Lee sign and trade that Chris Broussard of ESPN keeps talking about, Alston, and Miller or Jefferson.

Ellis, a proven scorer, has some excellent stats in his young career, and he seems like a “speed-ball” guy, coming from Golden State, which is probably speedball’s only other outpost in the NBA.

25.5 points a game last year?  This guy is quick as lightning and gets to the rim at will.  It would have to be viewed as an upgrade over David Lee, headed to Golden State.  I’d still sign Alston, and he’d play next to Ellis so that Ellis doesn’t have to run the offense.  Of course, if Raymond Felton wants to come play for the Knikcs, he’d be a player that they’d have to acquire.  Felton is young, can run the point, and shoot the ball.  And he moves his feet on defense.

Let’s go with the dream scenario right here.  Stoudemire, Ellis, Felton, and Jefferson or Miller.  You are adding them to Chandler, Gailinari, Toney Douglass, Curry, rookies Rautins and Fields, and perhaps some average big man.  The Knicks are reportedly interested in Brendan Haywood, but why would he leave Dallas for the Knicks?  I hope Haywood stays put because at this point, the Knicks need to be thinking center in next year’s draft, and I’d rather have a fresh face at a rookie level price than a guy like Haywood who will probably get $ 9-10 M/per.  Ellis has said he wants to play for the Knicks in the past, and Lee to the west makes sense.  Got my fingers crossed.

I think that kind of  team would be better to watch at least, and might be attractive to a Chris Paul or a Carmelo Anthony.  Maybe the Knicks get lucky on one of their 2nd round draft choices from this past draft, and they need to get lucky in the draft next year too.  If these things happen, the Knicks will have improved their roster considerably.

We’ll see.

North Carolina’s Green AK47 (above).

While we have no scientific tests along with this report, the trip report, startlingly stunning and plausible, has given us pause to think that maybe North Carolina tripper warmpids could possible be right in his assessment of the Green AK47.  And even if he’s not, based on the submission he made to www.pillreports.com earlier, it’s probably enough evidence that we have from his experience to know that these pills should be left alone.

Here’s warmpids report:

I take speed sometimes so I know for a fact these are def meth.
I also know they have caffeine because I snorted 1 & I have snorted caffeine pills in the past & if you’ve ever done that you never forget the scent or smell of it.

When I have MDMA I always feel it with in 30 to 45 mins… It took an hour & 45 mins for these.
I ate the first one at 7:30pm & snorted the other at 10:30pm & was up until 2:30am the next night despite the fact I drank 8 beers & never got sleepy. But if you like speed these have some of the best I have ever had so if thats what you want I recommend them. But if not stay the hell away from these.
Also I would have tested but i’m out and have to order another kit.

Hope this report will help.
Thanks

It does help, warmpids.  I love this report.  He snorted meth pills.  Okay, not my thing, but I have known a few people to do such things.  But he also snorted caffeine pills?  Lord.  I can see a little Ketamine, but that is cruel and unusual.  And here was the poor speed freak looking to roll, and he gets this shit pill.  If we had to guess, we might say these were piperazine, based on their appearance.  They got that outpressed pipe look about them.  But if warmpids is wrong, I have still learned a lot from this report, and enjoy it greatly.
