Mark Sanchez (above), stalking the field at Jets mini camp last week.

As is being reported by Manish Mehta via Twitter, and www.nfl.com, Mark Sanchez ran for the first time today on a treadmill since undergoing knee surgery following last season.  Sanchez turned heads last year by winning two playoff games on the road in his rookie season.

With troubled receiver Santonio Holmes on board, and with the recent addition of Sanchez’ former college teammate Joe McKnight–who has already had his professionalism called into question, Sanchez will be looked to lead this year, and not just manage ball games.

And Mark’s also got a Mafia princess to keep in line…

Santonio Holmes, exalted, as we hope to see him nay times this year.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan, in what could be a page ripped from the Joe Torre playbook entitled “Never Rip Your Players”, has spoken to new Jets slot receiver Santonio Holmes about his Thursday night flight controversy, and endorses the player’s side of the story unequivocally.

Here’s what he said in his Saturday press conference:

I talked to Santonio [Holmes] yesterday. The facts of the story are Santonio was sleeping. When the flight attendant came by, she said, “Will you please turn off your [iPod]?” There are so many i-things now, I don’t know which it was. He said, “Yeah, no problem.” Well, he was tired and never took out the ear things. He laid back down. When the lady came back and asked again, he said, “I did. I can hear every word you’re saying. I have it off.” He literally handed the ear things to the lady sitting beside him and she goes, “Yeah, you can’t hear anything.” They were off. When he landed, [he exited the plane and was asked to wait for] some police officers, they asked him about it and he said exactly what happened.

When Santonio told me, I totally believed him. It’s one of those things, but I believe Santonio and I’m looking forward to him being a Jet and playing here. That’s the story.

If Santonio is gonna catch 63 1st downs this year, I will be the first to endorse his behavior on commercial flights.  We’ll even buy him a new iPOD.
