Above is Tackle Tony Washington, shown running at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

Going into the 2009 college season, 6’6, 305 lbs. Tony Washington from Abilene Christian in Texas, was Gil Brandt’s 6th best offensive line prospect projected for the 2010 draft.

Other scouting sites had Washington firmly in the top 200 NFL ready prospects.  We have seen several scouts place him around 150th, but on Saturday, when the draft concluded, no one had taken Washington.  Perhaps it had something to do with a touchy subject that Washington spoke about length at the combine, the fact that he had sex with an underaged family member.

In May 2003, Washington was convicted of having sex with a relative that multiple NFL and college sources say was his 15-year old biological sister. The act was consensual, according to his college coaches and two NFL scouts, who spoke to him about the incident. The sister does not wish to speak publicly on the case, according to Washington’s agent, who added that the siblings are now on good terms and talk often. Washington received five years probation and did not serve jail time.

“I made a mistake at the age of 16, and for that, I am deeply sorry,” Washington told SportsFansLive.com. “I will not try and excuse or justify anything.”

Washington, a registered sex offender, avoided jail time narrowly, when the family member he had sex with appealed to the courts for leniency for Washington.  Despite who we think is Washington’s 15 year old biological sister coming forward on Washington’s behalf, their are many who do not feel the sex was consensual, and that the girl only came forward to spare her brother a long term in a maximum security prison.

While many fans are clamoring for their teams to step up and sign Washington, it seems unlikely.  Especially in the wake of the Ben Roethlisberger incident.  New developments concerning Roethlisberger are still coming to light, centering around his entourage of off duty cops, and in very bad taste, a photo of the 20 year old student Roethlisberger allegedly forced himself on has made it to the web.

As for Washington, well, he’s not a Super Bowl quarterback.  And while he may have been 16 and truly sorry, who does that?  If we are reading correctly between the lines here, Tony Washington raped his own sister.  Handing him an NFL jersey, a load of cash, and the impugnity that comes with it, would be a big mistake.
